Poplar Counselling's Team We are experienced Counsellors and Psychotherapists and/or Group Facilitators and our names are:
Jan Goddard, Trish Janes and Sarah Oyetunde   We live and work in the Brighton & Hove area and our services can be delivered anywhere in Sussex. About UsWe are all members of BACP and work within and are governed by their Ethical Framework and Guidelines. We work from a Person-Centred approach, which is a client led, non-directive therapy. Counselling and Psychotherapy supports our belief that every person is unique and therefore possesses different ways of responding to and resolving life's many challenges (See BACP about the different approaches) We believe the client is the one who has the best knowledge of your own issues and our role in sessions is to gain understanding by being non-judgemental, genuine, supportive, accepting and not being 'expert'. This can allow growth and change to develop for the client along with some insight into your own inner strengths and resources. "We believe the individual is a person of worth and value with the resources and abilities to be as self determining and as self directing as their circumstances allow."
"What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." Ralph Waldo Emerson
Out of crisis can come the opportunity for growth and change. We see Therapy and Groupwork as being very effective, and from experience we know it can be helpful in the short-term to deal with a crisis, or long-term for personal self development.
"The Chinese word for "Crisis" "wei ji" is the same as for "Opportunity"
Why we formed Poplar CounsellingWe were all working independently and came together as Poplar Counselling to pool our experience and to enable us to deliver good quality services to a wider client group. We think that good accessibility to Counselling Psychotherapy and Groupwork for all sections of our community, is a very important part of this, which is why we offer a sliding scale of fees to people on low income and to students. We are working hard to be in the position in the near future, to improve this part of our service and be able to offer low cost counselling alongside our existing services. ***NOW OFFERING LOW COST COUNSELLING SO PLEASE CONTACT US FOR MORE DETAILS***
How we chose our name We chose Poplar Counselling as a title / logo because we liked some of the meaning attached to the 'Poplar' tree. Trees often have a symbolism of growth and regeneration attached to them. The Poplar tree holds this symbolism, and has special significance as it has leaves that are light one side and dark the other thus it becomes the 'Tree of Life'. It also has a place within the general range of polorisation symbols (positive -negative) We felt this was complimentary to our beliefs of the huge potential towards growth that people have, even in dark times. The process of Individual or Group Therapy can allow a feeling of change and self development for the client, and things can start to feel lighter.
